Meet Nigeria's representatives to Big Brother Africa 2013

Beverly Osu is a model from Lagos. She describes herself as ‘smart, sexy, humble, loyal and crazy’. One of her favourite qualities is her sense of humour. In other people, she values ‘consistency, cleanliness, truth and humility’ and dislikes unkept promises, lies and pretence.
Beverley says that viewers can expect ‘a total packaged African young diva to command the right qualities and characteristics of a blunt, sexy go-getter’. She doesn’t really have any role models, choosing rather to take unique attributes from different people. Asked who has influenced her life most, Beverley says “who I want to influence me all depends on the situation at hand’.
She has made several appearances in many Nigerian music videos including Ice Prince’s ‘Oleku‘, 2shotz’ ‘Damn!‘, and many others. Beverly is reported to have been in a relationship with 2shotz a few years ago.
Her favourite musicians include John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Phenom and Rihanna.

Melvin Oduah is a model and actor from Delta State with a BSc in Chemistry. Melvin enjoys listening to Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and R Kelly.
His favourite place in Nigeria is Lagos and he says the best things about the continent as a whole are the culture and people. Outside of Nigeria, he enjoys spending time in South Africa and the USA because ‘these are places where you can relax and relate to people conveniently’.
In 2011, he contested in the Silverbird Mr Nigeria pageant and emerged first runner up, losing to Deji Bakare. A year before, he had contested in the Gulder Ultimate Search VI and emerged first runner up also, losing to winner Uche.
His friends and family inspired him to enter Big Brother. He has always been a fan of the show and has previously come out tops in two other reality shows. He is hoping to use all his experience and charm to go all the way on Big Brother. If he wins the grand prize, he’ll invest it, but he’s also hoping to make his country proud and use this experience as a platform to achieve other things in his career.

 Good luck to them!!!!

D’banj signs Durella...(Full story)

                                                     Durella and D’banj
D’banj‘s quest for dominance in the Nigerian music scene won’t stop now; he might have lost out on signing Olamide and Davido – but he has nicked another artiste, this time a familiar friend-foe.
The self-proclaimed ‘African Michael Jacskon‘, we’ve learnt has signed his friend-turned-foe-turned-friend Oluwadamilare Okulaja better known to the public as Durella.

The move might however not come as a surprise to everyone, considering that Banger Lee (that’s D’banj’s new nickname by the way) and the ‘King of the Zanga’ Durella recently settled their differences. Some weeks back, D’banj and his DB Records crew released a single ‘Ibadi e‘ off their compilation album (D’ King’s Men) which featured a verse from Durella.
Fans were very excited to see the pair had reunited after a very long and well publicized fall out between the pop acts.

FLASHBACK
The beef between Durella and D’banj started in late 2006 when the latter accused Banger Lee of jacking his style of singing. Apparently when D’banj and Don Jazzy returned to Nigeria in 2004, they met up with Durella and soon became friends. Sources tell us that D’banj and Durella were quite close and were spotted together in the studio several times.
I remember when Durella followed D’banj, Don Jazzy to Jahborne’s music factory studio when D’banj wanted to record ‘Tongolo’ remix’, a source recounts.
Of course D’banj had blown up and had released his second album ‘Rundown’ in 2007 when Durella signed with TC Records and finally launched his career. It didn’t take long for Durella to blow up too with hits like ‘In da Zanga’, ‘Wiskolowiska’ and ‘Shayo’ gaining massive appeal. He also won the MTV and Zain ‘Advance Warning’ reality show in 2008.
Then came the interviews; Durella clearly stated that D’banj had stolen his style. The media of course jumped on it, comparing both artistes. Truthfully, they did sound very similar. And it seemed like D’banj was aware as he switched up the flow on the 2008 Nigerian Pop classic album ‘The Entertainer’. Their fight sort of fizzled out though as Durella later backed off. ‘D’banj is my man, aaah, I like his mo gbono feli feli jam’, Durella told Onome ‘BigTyme’ Oyaide in an interview on urban radio station Rhythm FM 93.7 in late 2008.

BACK TO THE MATTER
We are told that D’banj and DB Records bought out Durella’s contract from his present record label IKONIC Music where the Pop act’s career has been in limbo since he signed in mid-2011 after ending his three-year contract with TC Records. His upcoming album ‘Back/Better/Bada’ has been pushed back one too many times
Durella has signed with D’banj, he (D’banj) bought out the contract, that’s what I can tell you’, a source in Durella’s camp tells us.

A rep. for D’banj refused to respond to enquiries after asking us to send text messages to her mobile phone...

Naeto C quits Storm Records...(Full story)

In the last 15 months, the Nigerian entertainment scene has witnessed more label shakedowns than we could have ever imagined. And the breakup season isn’t over yet…
Rapper Naetochukwu Chikwe better known as Naeto C has ended his relationship with Storm Records, the music home where he launched his career into the Nigerian music market.
NET investigations have revealed that the rapper plans to fully launch his WKG/Cerious Music label in a matter of months.
Unlike the many breakups that have preceded Naeto’s, the rapper’s exit is not battlemented; both parties have been very silent about the issue. As a matter of fact, Storm Records insist that the rapper is still signed with them.
One of the label’s directors Tola Odunsi admits that Naeto has had his own record label Cerious Music for a while but is still with Storm.
Naeto has had his record label for a while at least 3 years it’s called Cerious Music – his music is being pushed as a joint venture btw storm 360 and Cerious Music. Nothing has changed’, Odunsi responded to our enquiry via E-mail.
Naeto C’s profile is still active on the Storm Records official website but then again, we can’t take that seriously as General Pype (an artiste who has since parted ways with the label) also has his profile on the website.
An inside source however says Naeto has indeed left and his upcoming project will not be released under the Storm Records imprint. One insider said: ‘It is true Naeto started Cerious Music a few years back but the launch of his new outfit WKG (meaning White Kaftan Gang) will see him act fully as an independent artiste.’
WKG kicked off in the middle of 2012 with the launch of his ‘Tony Montana (Bad pass)’ video featuring D’banj. We are told he also plans to sign Lagos producer E-Kelly.
Storm Records was also not listed as one of the organizers of his first ever solo US tour which ran from late March to early May 2013.
Naeto who remains silent on the issue (he refused to reply our E-mail messages) has been busy though: he welcomed his first child while on tour in the US and returned to Nigeria to seal a deal with telecoms company Globacom as an ambassador. Popular artiste manager Godwin Tom also says Naeto is his new client.
Naeto joined Storm Records in 2006, returning from the US where he had already formed a rap group with close friend Ikechukwu and his younger brother Uzikwendu called ‘World Famous Akademy’. With the smash hit single ‘Kini big deal’, he released his debut album ‘You Know my P’ in 2008; parted ways with Ikechukwu who left Strorm in 2010 and then released a successful second album ‘Super C Season’ in February 2011.
Storm Records headed by Obi Asika and Olisa Adibua (the pair are currently in a legal battle) have in the past signed an impressive long list of acts including Jazzman Olofin, Darey, GT the Guitarman, 2shotz, General Pype. They currently have on their roaster rappers Sasha, Yung6ix, Pop singer Ms Jaie, Urban-Pop group L.O.S and gospel singer Tosin Martins.

"Lagos residents spend N1billion monthly on Entertainment and Parties"...Lagos State Government

You know what they say, aint no party like a Lagos party. And we are really spending the dough, to the tune of N1billion every month, according to the Lagos State government.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademorin Kuye said made this known yesterday. He said:
“Over N1billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment and parties, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax? The money goes into drinks, wine, food, aso-ebi and all of that and when they spend all of this money; they do not want to pay anything to the government”
"This justified the reason why local Governments demand that anyone organising events in the state must pay the Merriment Tax.”
“There is merriment tax in that constitution, its part of the rate Local Governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state”.
So basically, the State government is considering the introduction of merriment/party tax? How is that even going to work? LOL!!!

‘Thank God I’m alive’, Asa involved in car accident...

Nigerian singer Asa is really thankful that she’s alive after being involved in a car accident.
The singer took to social network Twitter to narrate the incident which happened in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

I was crossing an intersection, going for a walk, a car turning didn’t see me and boom!! Sent me flying. Thank God I landed on my padded butt. The only thing that got crushed was my water bottle‘, she narrated.
‘The driver wore tiny frames that f’ed up her peripherals. Told her she need jumbo glasses like mine. I’m well just a little wooz. I feel a little woozy. But everything’s fine. Got a ride in a police car and let the driver off with stern warning‘, she concluded her frightening story.

The singer then calmed her worried fans; ‘Was in shock for a minute. Paramedics checked my blood pressure. Everything’s fine. Thank God I’m alive today.

Chris Brown upsets his L.A. neighbors with painting on his wall...

Chris Brown has drawn criticism from his neighbors over the murals he had painted on a curbside wall at his home in the Hollywood Hills.

The Los Angeles Times reports that local residents are complaining that the images in the street art-style murals are too scary. "There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they're literally frightened," Hollywood Dell Civic Association president Patti Negri told the paper. "It's like devils on the wall - big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we're used to."

L.A. city code officials responded to the neighbors' complaints by citing Brown for unpermitted and excessive signage, with possible fines starting at $376. They ordered him to remove the painting within 30 days, after which the fines could rise.

Vast of Bracket diagnosed with cancer of the blood...

Nwanchukwu Ozioko, popularly known as Vast from the popular singing group, Bracket, has been diagnosed with Lymphoma, a type of cancer of the blood.

The singer was diagnosed in February this year after suffering serious body pains, headaches, non stop coughing, loss of weight and weakness while in Paris for a show. He flew to London where a test conducted determined he had cancer. Vast has been receiving treatment at the Wellington Hospital in the UK since February and I hear he's responding very well to treatment. He has undergone 4 cycles of chemotherapy with each cycle costing about N1.4million. He will do a few more before returning to Nigeria next month.

The sad part I hear from sources close to the singer is that he actually went to a hospital in Nigeria late last year when he started losing weight and feeling weak. They conducted a test on him but it took them forever to come back with the test result. Over three months actually. By then the cancer had spread to his liver. But thankfully he's getting better and will return home soon.

"I Need Sponsors To Help Me Shoot My Music Videos" - M.I Abaga

Multiple award winning rap artist and producer Jude MI Abaga while speaking as a panelist at the recently held Nigeria Entertainment Conference in Lagos decried the increasingly heavy costs to shooting standard music videos in the industry.

MI said in unequivocal terms that it is now “outrageously expensive” to shoot music videos adding that it gets even more difficult as sponsors are not forthcoming. He said this in turn makes it difficult to put out good music.According to MI “I have a record label called Loppy records and I must say it’s not been easy. Please if there is a sponsor here who can help me, please I need help”

True to MI’s words, budgets for video shoots now run into millions of naira, with props, models and costumes slicing thick into the cut.Videos shot outside the country, especially in South Africa and London take an even bigger toll on the artist.

Satelite Music channels who once feasted on Naija music videos have begun rejecting videos shot on a low budget which they now term as ‘crap’.
