At least
eight people were burnt to death by a mob on Monday at Abdu
Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara, Zamfara state, following alleged blasphemy
against Prophet Muhammed by a student of college.
The male student was accused of committing blasphemy during an
exchange of words with a Muslim friend, resulting to tension in the
school.
A student of the university told TheCable that when the
student saw the danger to his life, he ran to a house to hide himself.
However, his assailants forcefully gained entrance and set the
entire house ablaze, killing their target and all the seven people with him in
the house .
Zamfara state command of the Nigeria police force confirmed the
incident, saying it had enforced an indefinite curfew in the town
until peace is restored.
Shehu Muhammad, deputy superintendent of police and spokesman of
the police in the state, warned the public to respect the curfew,
saying violators would be arrested and prosecuted.
The police also called on religious leaders in the state to
speak with their followers to embrace peace.
Authorities of the polytechnic closed the institution down with
immediate effect, after the incident.
