The
Nigerian military has stated that it has no intention to venture into politics
or governance as was done in the past.
The military, in a statement by the Defence
Headquarters, was responding to a statement by Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy
Senate President, who warned Nigerians to ensure the survival of democracy.
In the statement, the defence spokesperson,
John Agim, a brigadier general, chronicled efforts by the past democratic
governments to ensure a more professional army.
“The Nigerian Military has come of age and is
in tune with best international military practices of complete and total
subordination to democratic governance,” Mr. Agim said.
