The National Economic
Council has raised the alarm over importation of some food items, especially
frozen chickens and fish preserved with dangerous chemicals.
NEC, at a meeting held
inside the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja
yesterday, urged the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National
Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to look into the
matter.
Imo State Governor
Rochas Okorocha stated this while addressing State House correspondents after
the meeting which was chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“We realised that some
of the frozen chickens and fish imported into this country are being preserved
with very dangerous chemicals. So, we are of the opinion that this area should be
looked into,” Okorocha said.
The governor said the
council also resolved that agriculture continue to take “the centre stage” for
the country to get out of the current economic recession.
Minister of Agriculture,
Audu Ogbeh, told the council that government was meeting targets on rice
production but that high importation was threatening farmers’ production
capacity.
The NEC approved the
engagement of independent professional revenue consultants to increase the
contribution of the solid minerals sector to the Federal Government revenue,
with the condition that the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development should
negotiate a threshold with the consultants on professional consultation fees.
