Five women who
allegedly specialized in hawking naira notes have been arrested in various
parts of Ogun State, Daily Trust gathered Monday.
The
suspects, Toyin Alegbe, Kehinde Akinbode, Shoneye Latifat, Kehinde Olanrewaju
and Iyanuoluwa Shokunbi, were arrested in Ijebu Ode, Shagamu and Abeokuta areas
of the state during a sting operation jointly carried out by police operatives
of the Ogun State Police Command and officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN) at the weekend.
The operation is in
line with the provisions of Section 21(1) of the CBN Act 2007 which made
hawking, selling and abuse of the naira a punishable offence.
Some
of the suspects arrested, sources revealed, had a syndicate that gets the naira
notes (new notes) available through some insiders at the CBN.
“They
are usually found at motor parks and social gathering centres selling for
between 25 and 30 per cent commission. For every N1000 they sometimes take 200
or 300. So at the end of it they can get N2000 or more on N10,000 sold,” a
source revealed.
The
police command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest said
various denominations of naira notes totaling N1.5 million were recovered from
the suspects who were publicly exhibiting their illicit trade.
