A
16-year-old boy, who was arraigned before an Ogba, Lagos, chief magistrate
court for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl, has told the magistrate he
only wanted to see the colour of the panties the girl was wearing.
The
prosecutor withheld the names of both the accused and his alleged victim because
they were regarded as minors.
The
accused, who is being tried on a count charge of defilement, told the court
yesterday that those who saw him in the act mistook his intention to mean he
was inserting his finger in the minor’s private part.
The prosecutor,
Inspector Christopher John, alleged that neighbours caught the accused in the
act at the Oremeji Street, Itire, Lagos, house where both parties reside and
raised the alarm that led to his arrest.
John added
that the boy told policemen at the station during interrogation that he had
heard so much about the female organ and was only curious to know why men run
after women, with no intention whatever of sexually abusing the little girl.
The girl’s
parents were, however, not convinced by the boy’s excuse and insisted that the
police charge the case to court.
Inspector
John told the court to note that both the defendant and the victim were minors
and should apply its discretion on the matter.
The
presiding magistrate, Mr Peter Nwaka, ordered that the accused be put in the
custody of the Remand Home and directed the prosecutor to send the case file to
the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.
