Just nine months after
hitting 200 million users, Instagram yesterday overtook Twitter, which said six
weeks ago it had 284 million users.
Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom revealed yesterday that more 70
million photos and videos are shared by its members every day.
"We’re proud to
announce that there are now more than 300 million Instagrammers. Over the past
four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global
community that shares more than 70 million photos and videos each day.
Instagram,
which was created 4 years ago and later bought by Facebook in 2012 now has over
300 million users,
Instagram will soon introduce verified accounts for celebrities
and brands. Verification will come in the form of "badges", which
will start rolling out over the coming days.
The social network also announced plans to delete fake and spammy
accounts as part of a massive clean-up operation. Users could see their follower counts fall as a result of the changes, with
Instagram sending a notification to anyone affected.
