A
Louisiana fugitive wanted since 2013 was caught after he flagged down a police
cruiser with the hope of catching a ride.
Jansen
Simon had been dodging authorities for nearly four years when he stopped an
off-duty deputy traveling home early Sunday on Highway 182 in Raceland, Fox 8 reported.
The
30-year-old suspect told the officer his friends had left him on the side of
the road and that he needed a lift. The deputy then verified Simon’s identity —
protocol for police picking up any stranded persons — and arrested him on the
spot.
Police
have been searching for Simon ever since he allegedly hit a man in the head
with a hammer during a fight at Cut Off, Louisiana in August 2013, according to
the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. He additionally has a pair of
outstanding warrants for contempt of court from that time.
Simon
was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on one count of
aggravated second-degree battery and two counts of contempt of court.
“It’s
not clear whether he knew he was flagging down a deputy,” sheriff’s office
spokesperson Officer Brennan Matherne told the news station. “Although it was a
fully marked patrol car, it was 1 a.m. in the morning.”
