A 40 year old man, Kayode Adedeji, has been sentenced to
death by hanging by an Osun state High Court in Osogbo for robbing a woman,
Omowunmi Adebayo, of N3,420 on April 25th 2009.
According to the
prosecuting counsel from the state ministry of justice, Elisabeth Alabi, the
condemned suspect had attacked his victim at her house in Illesa
armed with a knife at midnight on the day of the incident. Alabi told the
court that the suspect was apprehended by some members of the Oodua
Peoples Congress who kept vigil in the area.
During his
trial, he was granted bail but was re-arrested after committing another offence
which led to him being remanded in the Ilesa prison. She ruled that the
offence ran foul of the law and punishable under Section 11(2)(A) CAPR II, Laws
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004.
The presiding
judge, Kudirat Akano, found the condemned suspect guilty and ordered that he be
killed by hung despite pleas by the defence counsel, Tunde Adedokun, for the
court to be lenient and merciful in its judgment.
No date has
been fixed for execution of the judgement.
