The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the assignation attempt on Deputy
Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
Commissioner of Police
in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Mr Bala Ciroma,
revealed this to Channels Television on Tuesday.
Mr Ciroma made the
disclosure hours after the lawmaker raised an alarm that his residence was
invaded by armed men.
He said a suspect who
was believed to be connected with the incident was already in custody and the
matter was being handled by the Force Headquarters.
According to the
commissioner, the police have sent a delegation led by the Deputy Inspector
General of Police (Operations), Mr Joshak Habila, to visit Senator Ekweremadu.
He added that he was
part of the delegation while the police have begun an investigation to
apprehend other suspects involved in the attack.
Senator Ekweremadu had
raised the alarm in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche
Anichukwu.
According to the
statement, the incident occurred at about 4:00 am on Tuesday at his Apo
Quarters residence in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Some armed men were
said to have discreetly evaded the security and entered the house after which
they took hold of Ekweremadu’s son and ordered him to lead them to his father’s
bedroom.
A struggle reportedly
ensued in the lawmaker’s bedroom, causing some of the invaders to escape while
one of them was arrested.
The lawmaker’s aide
said the arrested member of the gang refused to divulge any information on the
operation.
The incident was later
brought to the notice of the Senate during plenary.
The upper chamber,
thereafter, directed it Committee on Police Affairs to interface with the
police over the incident.
