California cops rescued a newborn girl who was buried alive in a riverbed after worried a passersby heard her muffled cries, authorities said Saturday.
The
infant is in stable condition after she was found covered in pieces of asphalt
and rubble in the Compton riverbed, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. Officials are hunting for the girl’s
mom and searching for answers about her abandonment.
People
passing the riverbed, which sits along a bike path, called the sheriff’s
station around 4 p.m. Friday after they heard a baby crying, but couldn’t find
the infant.
Deputies
followed the stifled screams and eventually found the tiny girl in a crevice
along the biking path. The newborn was wrapped in a blanket and covered with a
layer of rocks and rubble, officers said.
The
newborn, believed to be between 36 and 48 hours old, was cold to the touch,
deputies said. She was taken to a local hospital, where doctors listed her in
stable condition. She remained there for observation Saturday.
Investigators
have asked anyone with information about the abandoned infant to come forward.
