The Lagos State
Government on Thursday disclosed that two people have died of rabies disease at
the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after they were bitten by
dogs.
Lagos State Commissioner
for Health, Dr Jide Idris who confirmed it said the two victims were admitted
at the teaching hospital.
According to him, the
first victim was a 49-year-old man while the second victim was a 33-year old
man.
He said the two victims
died of the disease on March 8 and 13, 2017 respectively.
Idris explained that the
49-year-old man who resides in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu was bitten by his three
months old dog which he bought six weeks before the incident.
The commissioner also
said that the man died few hours after he was admitted at the hospital.
On the second victim,
Idris said the patient came to LUTH on March 9, and was said to have been
bitten by a dog six months before.
"The patient was
given tetanus injection after the bite and the dog was killed. The patient died
on March 13, 2017," he added.
The commissioner
explained that rabies is a disease caused by the rabies virus species.
He said children between
the ages of 5-14 years are very vulnerable to dying of rabies because of their
frequent interactions with dogs and their small size.
