Eagle-eyed security operatives attached to the Edo State
Government House Friday night foiled an attempt by one of the drivers in the
convoy of the State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, to break into the Accounts
Section of the Government House.
The security operatives who were on routine
check were said to have noticed the suspect cutting off protectors in the
accounts office. But on sighting the operatives, the suspected thief tried to
escape, unknown to him that he had already been identified by the security men
who followed him up and apprehended him.
He was promptly handed over to police at the
Aideyan Police Station in Benin.
A top security source in Government House who
disclosed how the incident happened, said “policemen were going on routine duty
and noticed somebody attempting to break into the account office and foiled the
attempt.
“I am very proud of my men”, the source said,
adding that a discreet investigation would be carried out to ascertain whether the driver acted alone or in concert with others.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police
Command spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwuchei, said “there was a report of such
nature. It is still at investigation level. The Commissioner of Police has ordered
the State Criminal Investigation Department(CID) to take over the
investigation.
“As I speak with you, the DC State CID should
be in Government House to visit the scene of crime,” Onwuchei said.
