Daily Independent Reports:
A civil servant, Mr Musibau Lawal, has
pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his three-year-old
marriage for alleged threat to his life.
Lawal, 43, told the
court on Friday that his wife, Wunmi, was always threatening his life with
cutlass and knife.
“Anytime we had
misunderstanding or engaged in fighting she would bring out knife or cutlass
and threaten to kill me. The petitioner said Wunmi always stripped him naked
while cursing him.
“There was a day she
placed a curse on me that I would be sacked in my office and truly that day,
when I got to office, I was greeted with a sack letter.
“When I came back that
day, she again cursed me that I would never come across a helper, so I ran away
from the house to avert more problems,” he said. He also accused his wife for embarrassing
him always in the public, fighting and dragging him.
“My wife has made me a
laughing stock in my area; I always sneaked out of my house and sneaked in just
to avoid people, who always made jest of me,” Lawal said.
Lawal asked the court
to dissolve the marriage, as he was no longer interested because his life was
in danger.
Wunmi, 36, and a
fashion designer, said she usually used knife to threaten her husband as self
defence.
“I don’t mean to hurt
him with the knife, I always used it as defence to prevent him from beating
me,” she said.
She, however, denied
the allegation that she used to curse her husband, saying anytime he offended
her, she would hand him over to God.
“My husband is good in
complaining, he always complained that I slept naked and I don’t see anything
wrong in that, as husband and wife I don’t need to cover myself while asleep.”
She urged the court not to dissolve their marriage, saying she still loved her
husband.
The court president, Mr
Ruphus Adeyeri, adjourned the case till January 15 for judgement.
