Teacher Bags 7 Years Jail Term For Raping Minor

GIRL-DRUGGED-AND-RAPED
An Ado-Ekiti High Court on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old class teacher, Kareem Akinyemi to seven years imprisonment for defiling a nine-year-old girl.
Presiding Judge Olayemi Abodunde, said the prosecution has proved that the teacher sexually abused the minor.
“I am convinced that the prosecution has proved that the accused sexually abused and exploited the child.
“Teachers are supposed to be destiny helpers and shapers not destroyers,” she said.
“I am of the view that the accused is guilty of sexually abusing and exploiting the nine-year-old girl.
“He is accordingly convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
“This would send a strong message across board that sexual offence against the child is not permitted,” Abodunde said.
She decried the increase in cases of defilement and sexual assault of minors in recent times.
The State Counsel, Mrs Oyin Olatunbosun, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb.5,2013 at No. 45,Surulere St.,Ise-Ekiti.
She said that the accused, on the said date, unlawfully raped the nine-year-old girl, when her mother sent her to buy milk for her.
She said that the accused was a teacher at St. Stephen Primary School, Ise-Ekiti, and also the victim’s private home teacher.
Olatunbosun said after the incident, the girl experienced pains after urinating and confessed to have been raped.
The prosecution called six witnesses and tendered 11 exhibits.
According to her, the offence contravened Section 32(1)(2) of the Child’s Rights Law,2012.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Tunde Alake who called one witness urged the court to tamper justice with mercy as the accused was a first offender. (NAN)
